The programme offers scholarships for stays in Austria in order to work on dissertations and theses, scholarships to attend summer schools teaching German/Czech, in tandem with Austrian students at “Sommerkolleg” and scholarships for university teachers to undertake a research/lecture stay.

General conditions

The target group is citizens of EU member states, countries in the European Economic Area and Switzerland who are enrolled in full-time courses or are employed at a public university in the Czech Republic. Scholarship-funded stays in Austria may be carried out at state universities, vocational colleges, teacher-training colleges and accredited private universities. 

Who can participate?

Citizens of EU member states, countries in the European Economic Area, and Switzerland who are enrolled on full-time courses at a public university in the Czech Republic. 

Under what conditions can I participate?

Scholarships are intended for students of master's and other postgraduate study programmes so that they may work on dissertations or theses (there is an exception for medical students). Students in all fields of study may apply for financial support. Scholarships are intended primarily to enable students to obtain materials in university and technical libraries and archives, to conduct research in laboratories or work in a studio, to engage in field data collection by means of surveys or expert interviews, to hold consultations with Austrian teachers, etc., depending on each candidate's field of study and research plans.

    Scholarships last from one to five months (applicants choose for themselves). 

    What financial support will I receive?

    The amount of the monthly scholarship for Czech students is EUR 1,050. In addition, students are exempted from Austrian tuition fees.

    Selection procedure 

    • On the basis of a written application. There is no interview
    • Results of the selection procedure are made known within six weeks of submitting an application
    • Publication at www.dzs.cz and written notification of applicants
  • Summer schools organised in the Czech Republic

    Bilateral language courses in the Czech republic. In the morning, groups of Czech students learn German and groups of Austrian students learn Czech. The lessons are given by Czech and Austrian lectors respectively. In the afternoons and during weekends, there are 3 or 4 excursions and tours, facultative courses, film projections, discussions and lectures by interesting people etc., in both languages.

    For how long?

    Summer schools are three weeks long.

    What financial support will I receive?

    Students of Czech public universities with intermediate to advanced proficiency in German may apply for a scholarship. Preference will be given to students who have not yet participated in any summer school. The participants selected pay a participation fee of CZK 3,000.

    Applications for summer schools are submitted in the spring, directly to the organising universities in České Budějovice and Poděbrady.

    The deadline for the applications in 2021 as well as detailed summer schools programmes and dates will be announced in February 2021.

Academics at public universities

Who can participate?

Citizens of EU member states, countries in the European Economic Area, and Switzerland who are employed at public universities in the Czech Republic.

Under what conditions can I participate?

University teachers at public universities in the Czech Republic.

Where can I go?

To Austria 

  • on a short-term research stay: an opportunity to engage in research or give lectures at a foreign host institution. Participants may choose from a list of authorised universities. Research may also be carried out in archives, libraries, museums and research institutions.
  • on a research stay to complete a habilitation thesis.

For how long?

Short-term research stays for university teachers last for 1-3 months. They may apply for one-month stays repeatedly.

Stays by postdoctoral students to prepare their habilitation thesis may last for up to five months. They may apply for these stays within 10 years of defending their dissertation.

What financial support will I receive?

The amount of the monthly scholarship is EUR 1,150 for teachers and EUR 1,200 for postdoctoral students.

How to apply

  • Online at www.scholarships.at, in English or German.
  • Deadlines for applications for scholarship-funded research stays are announced four times a year, in spring and autumn. A stay may take place no earlier than three months after the application has been submitted.
  • The deadline for submitting applications for habilitation scholarships is announced once a year, and these stays may take place no earlier than six months after the application has been submitted.
