Barrande Fellowship Programme call for applications open until February 4. What is on offer?

The Barrande Fellowship Programme is designed to support French-Czech exchange of doctoral students.

As in the previous couple of years, the French institute in Prague organized two webinars for young scholars from Czech and French universities to acquaint them with the Barrande Fellowship Programme and its current call. The programme focuses on French-Czech partnership in science through supporting exchange and research stays of individual PhD students who seek opportunities to practise research abroad, to network and to get involved in international research teams. Successful Europe-wide projects will later on have a good chance to get financial support from the EU research and innovation funding programme Horizon Europe.

Students who search for a short-term research stay and those who aspire to get a scholarships for multi-annual doctoral degree study under the joint supervision (cotutelle) are eligible to apply. Cotutelle is undertaken simultaneously at a Czech and a French higher education institution and upon graduating the student is awarded two diplomas, one from each institution.

The webinar for the French audience was held on December 9. Véronique Debord-Lazaro, the scientific attaché at the Embassy of France in the Czech Republic was the first speaker to take the floor.

"As many of you may know, we are only a few weeks away from an exceptional year for both France and the Czech Republic", Debord-Lazaro said. "In January 2022, France will take over the presidency of the Council of the European Union and 6 months later we will hand it over to the Czech Republic. The fellowships we are promoting are also a way for both countries to reaffirm that they share strong European values: support to scientific excellence, promotion of science towards younger generations, and the mobility for students and researchers."

The application deadline is February 4. In spring 2022, each application will be assessed by one of several evaluation committees made up of scholars and researchers. Successful candidates will start their exchange stays in autumn 2022.

The Czech National Agency for International Education and Research acts as a contact point for applicants and participates in the selection procedure. Guides for applicants, the application form, and a list of required application documents are available on the programme’s website.
