Foreign Exchange Stays

The Central European Exchange Programme for University Studies is an exchange programme for regional cooperation between universities in Central and South-Eastern Europe.

In addition to traditional physical mobility, students and teachers can now apply for a stay in addition to traditional mobility in the form of virtual - online mobility or hybrid - blended mobility. For more information on these options and conditions, contact the Czech National Office directly.

General conditions

  • Scholarships are intended for full-time students and full-time academic staff.
  • You cannot apply for a scholarship for the country of which you are a citizen.
  • There are no age restrictions on eligibility for a scholarship.
  • Scholarships cannot be awarded for research, with the exception of bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral theses, but may be awarded for practical training.

I'm a university student

Who can participate?

Students apply for mobility at their National CEEPUS Office, ie in the country from which they arrive in the Czech Republic.

You are a citizen of a CEEPUS member country, or  you have documents proving that you have the same rights in that country as its citizens.

Applicants from non-member countries submit with their application:

  1. temporary or permanent residence permit in the country where they study;
  2. confirmation from a university, in English, that they are duly enrolled for the entire duration of the study cycle.

Under what conditions can I participate?

I am currently studying at an eligible university for a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree. The list of eligible HEIs is available at the portal www.ceepus.info or you can also contact your home National CEEPUS Office.

Please bear in mind that bachelors students must have completed at least two semester of study before beginning the mobility.

Which countries are involved in the program?

Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Montenegro, Croatia, Czechia, Hungary, North Macedonia, Moldova, Poland, Austria, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Serbia, Kosovo*

* The Czechia has recognised the autonomy of Kosovo and cooperates with this country.

For how long?

Study visits are

  1. short-term, lasting for 1-2 months, for the purpose of preparing a thesis (undergraduate or postgraduate). The shortest possible stay is 21 days. If a visit is longer than 1 month, it must last for at least 16 days into the next month in order for the participant to qualify for the scholarship.
  2. a semester long, lasting for 3-10 months. The shortest eligible period is 2 months and 16 days.
  3. field trips lasting 3-5 days and summer schools lasting 6-30 days.

The total number of trips during bachelor’s or master’s studies n=must not exceed 10 scholarship months. There is no limit on the number of trips for doctoral students.

What financial support will I receive?

Scholarships are paid in the host country upon arrival at the foreign university. The amount of the scholarship and the conditions for the payment thereof vary from one country to another. Travel expenses may be reimbursed to scholarship-holders by their home university.

If you have any questions, you can get in touch with the contact officers at your own or the foreign university. Advice may also be sought from our or the foreign National CEEPUS Office.

The current amount of scholarships being disbursed can be found under the flags of the member countries at www.ceepus.info.

How to apply

  1. Check that you meet the general and specific conditions for the award of a scholarship.

  2. Consult the CEEPUS contact officer at your university.

    If the faculty is not involved in a suitable CEEPUS network, you can register as a “CEEPUS freemover” (but usually only for the summer semester). If your application is successful, you will enjoy the same conditions as applicants within the network. The list of CEEPUS university networks and contact officers in the running academic year at Czech universities can be found in the section Important documents. 

  3. Register on the programme’s site at www.ceepus.info – the official language of the programme is English (brief registration instructions).

  4. Fill in the application and submit it in time

    Students attach the following, on the prescribed forms, to a CEEPUS freemover application:

    • Letter of Acceptance from the host university.
    • Two Letters of Recommendation from the home university.

    The annexes must be attached to the application before it is submitted. They cannot be submitted afterwards. 

    When filling in the application, don’t forget to choose the right type of mobility, according to the length of stay:

    • Field trips from 3 to 5 days – STE (Short-Term-Excursion)
    • Short-term stays from 6 days to 2 months – STS (Short-Term-Student)
    • Semester stays from 3 to 10 months – S (Student)

    Please fill in carefully the application and try to write answers to following questions:

    • What is your field of study at your university?
    • How good are your grades?
    • Why do you apply for a CEEPUS grant?
    • Why are you applying for this specific country/county/project?
    • What exactly do you plan to do at your host institution?
    • Which lectures, courses etc. do you plan to attend and why?
    • What have you done in preparation of your study stay abroad?

    Add also informaton about yourself:

    • What have you been doing?
    • What would you like to achieve?
    • What are your strengths?

      Before you submit your application please check whether you have really completed all parts and attached all obligatory documents (this apply esp. for freemovers).

      You can follow the progress of the application approval process in your profile after logging in to the system. The foreign National CEEPUS Office will usually notify you of the approval of the application within 6 weeks of its submission.

    • After the scholarship has been awarded, you will receive a Letter of Award, along with other information and instructions you need to follow.

      Log in to the system, open the submitted application and accept the conditions of the scholarship by pressing the Accept button.

    • Before the end of your study visit at the foreign university, log in to the system again and fill in the Mobility Report and Letter of Confirmation. Print them out, have them confirmed by the host university and, after scanning them, enter them in the system. Keep the original documents as proof of the trip for your home university.

      for stays in the winter semester

      for stays in the summer semester as a freemover

    I’m an academic or university staff

    Academic university staff  and university staff have the opportunity to obtain a scholarship for stays in the countries of Central and South-Eastern Europe. They can also go on short professional visits for teaching, excursion, summer/winter schools or network meetings.

    Who can participate?

    University teachers and university staff from International Relations Office who are citizens of a CEEPUS member country. Applicants from non-member countries provide proof of confirmation from their university, in English, that they are full-time staff and involved in CEEPUS activities.

    Where can I go?

    Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Montenegro, Croatia, Hungary, North Macedonia, Moldova, Poland, Austria, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Serbia, Kosovo*

    * Most member countries, including the Czech Republic, cooperate with Kosovo and have recognised its autonomy.

    For how long?

    Academics may apply for

    1. teaching stays lasting 5 days to 1 month;
    2. field trips lasting 3-5 days and summer/winter schools lasting 6-30 days;
    3. a network meeting with network partners for 2-3 days (with no obligation to teach).

    There is no limit on the number of trips during the academic year.

    University staff from International Relations Office may apply for job-shadowing at a partner university for 2-5 days.There is a limit of one stay per person and network. The mobility is possible in the frame of a network only - no freemover.

    What financial support will I receive?

    4. Academic staff attach the following to their CEEPUS freemover application:

      • Freemover Letter Teacher from the host university.

      The document must be attached to the application before it is submitted. It cannot be submitted afterwards.

      When filling in the application, don’t forget to choose T (Teacher) as the type of mobility, regardless of the type and length of stay.

      Please list your planned teaching/supervising assignments in the application and write why you would like to visit the chosen host institution?

      Add please add also short information about yourself:

      • What have you been doing?
      • What would you like to achieve?
      • What are your strengths?

      Before you submit your application please check whether you have really completed all parts and attached all obligatory documents (this apply esp. for freemovers).
