Clean energy, restored lands: The path forward for coal regions

On 29–30 September 2026, the Clean energy, restored lands: The path forward for coal regions conference will take place in Bochum, Germany, bringing together researchers, representatives of public authorities, industry and regions to support the just transition of coal regions and strengthen links between research and innovation, policymaking and practical implementation. The first day will present projects funded by the Research Fund for Coal and Steel (RFCS), focusing in particular on clean energy production, energy storage, post-mining land restoration and material recovery. The second day will focus on policy frameworks, practical project implementation and the experiences of individual coal regions. The programme will also include site visits to former and active mining locations and the accompanying event Beyond coal: Youth perspectives for thriving regions, dedicated to involving young people in the just transition. The event is jointly organised by the European Research Executive Agency (REA), the European Association for Coal and Lignite (EURACOAL), Technische Hochschule Georg Agricola and the European Commission’s Coal Regions in Transition (CRiT) initiative. Registration for in-person participation is open until 9 September, after which only online registration will be available.
