New members of ERC Scientific Council

The new members will take office on 1 January 2023.

The European Commission appointed five new members to the governing body of the European Research Council, the Scientific Council. These scientists are appointed for an initial period of four years, replacing five members whose mandate expired. The new members of the ERC Scientific Council are:

  • Professor Harriet Bulkeley, Durham University
  • Professor Thomas Henzinger, Institute of Science and Technology
  • Professor Leszek Kaczmarek, Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology, Polish Academy of Sciences
  • Professor Luke O’Neill, Trinity College, Dublin
  • Professor Björn Ottersten, University of Luxembourg

The Scientific Council defines the ERC's scientific funding strategy and methodologies. It is composed of 22 members, all eminent scientists and scholars, who represent the scientific community in Europe and are appointed by the European Commission following recommendations by an independent Identification Committee.

By the same Commission Decision, the term of office of five current members of the ERC Scientific Council is renewed:

  • Professor Geneviève Almouzni
  • Professor Ben Feringa
  • Professor Mercedes Garcia-Arenal
  • Professor Eystein Jansen
  • Professor Jesper Qualmann Svejstrup
