New analytical report looks at the employment and social situation of young people in Europe

CZELO

Young people have been hardest hit by job loss during the pandemic and economic crisis and their recovery has been the slowest.

On 12 July 2022, the European Commission's Directorate-General for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion published its annual The annual Employment and Social Developments in Europe review. This year's analytical report Young Europeans: employment
and social challenges ahead
highlighted, among other things, the following inequalities concerning young people:

  • Nearly 1 in 2 young people under 30 has temporary contract, compared to only compared to 1 in 10 for workers from older age groups.
  • Although there are differences between countries, in most cases it is young people who face a difficult social and financial situation to pay for basic living needs such as housing.
  • Gender pay inequalities exist at the start of a career, with young women earning 7.2% less on average in the EU. Moreover, the gap widens with age

Moreover, there is a risk that inequalities will increase further as a result of Russia's war aggression against Ukraine and the resulting price rises.

The report also provides an overview of the European Commission's employment and social policies that could help address the situation of young people.
