ERIS has published a Policy Brief on Industry 5.0, a transformative vision for Europe.

Independent expert group ESIR that advises the European Commission on the transformative research and innovation policy, has recently published a publication on Industry 5.0, a transformative vision for Europe. The group was formed shortly before the outbreak of Covid-19 and recommends how to develop a forward-looking and transformative research and innovation policy. The aim is to support the development of the twin green and digital transitions of the economy, increase the global competitiveness of EU industry and strengthen Europe's strategic autonomy.

Document builds on the experience gained during the Covid-19 crisis and how the crisis strongly affected the EU economy. The aim is to build greater resilience of the existing economy using the tools of Industry 5.0 that uses new set of economic ecosystems that will be more resilient to future pandemic and ecological challenges. According to the document, Europe should shift from the current economic model based on ‘extraction and consumption’ to a model that generates value from re-use, regeneration and reduction on consumption. This will require new business models and update of value and supply chains. Coordination of communication at all levels of the political spectrum and the involvement of European industry will be also crucial step in adoption of new approaches.
