EU Budget 2022 deal: increased budget for research and education
European Parliament and the Council reached a provisional agreement on the 2022 EU Budget.
On 16 November 2021, representatives of the European Parliament and the Council reached a provisional agreement on the 2022 EU Budget. They agreed that commitments would amount to € 169.5 billion and payments to € 170.6 billion, an increase of € 479.1 million compared to the original budget proposed by the European Commission. Increased budget will be allocated mainly to programmes and policies which strongly reflects the EU’s main priorities such as post pandemic recovery, sustainable recovery and investment in green and digital transformation.
These include, for example, the Horizon Europe research program, whose budget will be topped by € 100 million, and the LIFE Environment and Climate Action Program, which will get € 47.5 million above the Commission’s draft budget. The budget of Erasmus + program will be increased by € 35 million. Furthermore, more funding will be allocated to the European Single Market Program, EU4Health, humanitarian aid, or the European Public Prosecutor's Office.
The agreement has yet to be formally confirmed by the European Parliament and the Council. The Council is expected to approve it on 23 November and the Parliament on 25/26 November.
