The European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the European Patent Office (EPO) to strengthen cooperation on intellectual property rights. The establishment of framework for close partnership between the EIT and the EPO aims to respond to changing demands of the dynamic global patent system and to transfer the expertise to European innovators and SMEs.

With the Memorandum of Understanding, the EIT and the EPO undertake to develop specific activities, projects and programmes that will support innovators and entrepreneurs across Europe with their innovative ideas and subsequent commercialization. The cooperation aims to boost economic growth, foster intellectual property culture among researchers, innovators and entrepreneurs while also improving their access to the European IP system.
