CZELO invites you to its Science Café on microplastics

CZELO

Czech Liaison Office for Education and Research in Brussels (CZELO) and its partners are pleased to invite you to another edition of the traditional Science Café evening, which will take place on 24 May 2022 at Prague House in Brussels. This time, the invitation was accepted by Ondřej Adamovský, who is a principal investigator at RECETOX Centre, an independent institute of the Faculty of Science of Masaryk University in Brno. In his research he focuses on environmental toxicology which aims to understand the mechanisms and long-term impacts of acute and chronic exposures to anthropogenic chemicals and natural toxins. Apart from being involved in various H2020 projects, Ondřej also works as an expert evaluator for European Research Council and guest editor for several journals.

The topic of our discussion will be the microplastics and their impact on our lives.

Plastics make our lives easier in many ways and are often lighter and cost less than alternative materials. However, if they are not properly disposed of or recycled, they may end up in the environment where they stay for centuries and degrade into smaller and smaller pieces.Microplastics hardly degrade in the environment, and could be found in most of the ecosystems from the summit of Mount Everest to the deepest oceans. They were already detected in wide spectrum of living organisms, including fish and shellfish, and most importantly, in human body. Just recently, microplastic pollution has gained considerable attention, as they been detected in human blood and placenta for the first time. These discoveries indicate the micro- and nano-plastics can travel around the body and may lodge in organs. However, the impact on our health has yet to be determined.

Science Café is a forum for discussion on current topics and interesting scientific issues. It aims to be informal and accessible. Anyone can participate; speaker is there to be questioned and to talk about his/her work.
