Women make up 27% of principal investigators in the proposed projects.

The European Research Council (ERC) has published the preliminary data on proposals submitted to the ERC Synergy Grants 2023 which closed for applications on 8 November 2022.

This year the ERC received 395 applications. In total, 1,350 principal investigators from 1,236 host institutions applied. An average proposed project involves three principal investigators and has a budget of about €9 million. The highest number of principal investigators comes from German (197) and Italian (143) institutions.

When it comes to the gender balance, 65% of proposals include women, which is a slight increase from previous years.

In the ERC Work Programme, the ERC Scientific Council has earmarked 300 million for an estimated 30 Synergy Grants. The ERC is now starting the evaluation of the proposals. The projects selected for funding are planned to be announced the autumn of 2023.
