Foreign Exchange Stays

The Barrande Fellowship Programme supports Czech PhD students going to study in France and French PhD students coming to study in the Czech Republic.

General conditions

The programme supports short stays as well as PhD studies under an agreement on joint supervision (“cotutelle de thèse”) in all academic fields – medicine, natural sciences, engineering and exact sciences, humanities, economics and law.

Where can I go?

  • Double degree PhD program under joint supervision (cotutelle)

A doctoral degree programme is undertaken jointly at a Czech and a French university and on its completion, the student will be awarded two diplomas, one from each institution. Research is conducted under the joint supervision of a Czech and a French supervisor.

  • Short (research) stays

Research stays take place at a university, a research centre or a university hospital. Those students who are not already in touch with a foreign institution are advised to meet their current supervisor at their home university first and inquire about the existing French-Czech forms of cooperation.

For how long?

The scholarship is awarded for a maximum of three years. The student undertakes a 5-month stay abroad every year. Stays abroad should start on 1 October or 1 November.

Length of a short stay is between 1 and 3 months.

What financial support will I receive?

Students of Czech universities receive a monthly stipend in the amount of 1,500 EUR. Students of French universities receive a monthly stipend in the amount of 35,000 CZK. This applies both to PhD studies under cotutelle and to short stays.
