Study of foreigners in the Czech Republic

Activities providing for university studies or study stays of foreigners – scholarship holders at public Higher Education institutions in the Czech Republic within the framework of the Foreign Development Assistance Programme or on the basis of bilateral intergovernmental agreements on cooperation in the field of education.

Basic information

The updated programme of the „Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports Scholarships to Support Studies for Foreign Nationals at Public Institutions of Higher Education in the Czech Republic“ is published by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports in its bulletin, n.5/2014 (Věstník MŠMT, sešit 5/2014).

Admission of Foreign Students for Study in the Czech Republic within the Framework of the Foreign Development Assistance Programme

Within the framework of the Foreign Development Assistance Programme, the Czech Republic offers scholarships to foreigners for the standard  length of study in accredited higher education study programmes held at public Higher Education Institutions and for Czech language study courses and preparatory training.

Scholarships are granted for a standard length of study in the Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral study programmes in Czech language, preceded by a one-year Czech language course and preparatory training, and for study in follow-up Master's and Doctoral study programmes in English.

Government scholarships for study at public Higher Education Institutions in the Czech Republic are provided on the basis of a decree of the Czech Government in the shared project of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports (www.msmt.cz) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (www.mzv.cz). The Ministry of Foreign Affairs annually gives a notice of the offer of government scholarships via the Embassies of the Czech Republic (ECR). The scholarship can be applied for by the foreigners without Czech permanent residence who are citizens of a state receiving foreign development assistance of the Czech Republic and who meet the criteria set in the Guidelines for Granting Scholarships of the Government of the Czech Republic.

Each applicant is obliged to fill in an electronic application form by 30 September at the latest. The applicant shall send the completed application form to the Embassy in electronic form, i.e. by completing online registration. The most successful applicants shall be asked to submit complete documentation by a given deadline that the Embassy shall determine so as to ensure that proposals for scholarships to be granted in a new academic year are at the disposal of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic (Development Cooperation Department) and the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic (Department for International Relations and EU) in Prague by no later than 31 December of the year preceding given academic year.

Applicants who are staying in the Czech Republic at the time of application may submit the relevant documents to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Development Cooperation Department, by no later than 20 December of the year preceding given academic year.

The Centre for International Cooperation in Education, Internationalization of Studies in the Czech Republic Unit, is authorized by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports to fulfil various tasks to ensure the study of officially nominated government scholarship students in accordance with Guidelines for Granting Scholarships of the Government of the Czech Republic and with the relevant scholarship programme of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports.

Admission of Foreign Students for Study/Research Stays under Intergovernmental Agreements

The Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports (www.msmt.cz) annually offers scholarships for study/research stays in the Czech Republic, in pursuance of bilateral intergovernmental or departmental agreements arranged with a number of countries. Candidates for the scholarship are nominated exclusively by the appropriate authorities of eligible countries.

Application forms must be submitted only through the appropriate authorities of eligible countries.
